Poker hands are ranked the way they are due to the probability of each hand, the higher the probability the higher the rank. For example a Straight Flush only occurs once in 64,973 hands compared to One Pair which occurs every 1.37 hands, a Straight Flush is therefore ranked higher then One Pair.

General rules
Best five card hand - highest ranked hand followed by highest ranked card, the kicker, but only 5 cards used e.g. no kicker when hand is a Full House.

Each card is ranked from A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A (low - when part of a ranked hand).

Suits have no value.

Hand rankings are arranged in order of rank (probability).

1. Straight Flush

A Straight Flush is five cards in sequence of the same suit.

Probability: 0.00154% Odds: 64,973 : 1

2. Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same rank plus one unmatched card.

Probability: 0.0240% Odds: 4,164 : 1

3. Full House

Three cards of the same rank plus two matching cards of another rank. A tie is broken by the rank of the three similar cards followed by the rank of the pair.

Probability: 0.144% Odds: 693 : 1

4. Flush

Five cards of the same suit, not in rank sequence. A tie is broken by the rank of the highest card, then the second highest card etc, etc.

Probability: 0.197% Odds: 508 : 1

5. Straight

Five cards in sequence of different suit. A tie is broken by the highest card, if these are the same it is a split pot.

Probability: 0.392% Odds: 254 : 1

6. Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same rank plus two unmatched cards. A tie is broken by the highest ranked three of a kind.

Probability: 2.11% Odds: 46.3 : 1

7. Two Pair

Two cards of the same rank plus two cards of the same rank, but different to the first two, plus one unmatched card. A tie is broken by the highest pair, followed by the highest second pair, followed by the kicker.

Probability: 4.75% Odds: 20.0 : 1

8. One Pair

Two cards of the same rank, plus three unmatched cards. A tie is broken by the highest pair followed by the kickers.

Probability: 42.3% Odds: 1.37 : 1

9. High Card

Five cards of different rank. A tie is broken by the highest ranked card followed by the kickers.

Probability: 50.1% Odds: 0.995 : 1
