Home > Poker Games > Limit Texas Holdem BasicsLimit Texas Holdem, or Fixed Limit Texas Holdem, up until the late 90's was the Holdem game of choice throughout the poker rooms of casino's globally. It wasn't until No-Limit was introduced onto our TV screens in the mid 2000's that it started to over take Limit Texas Holdem in popularity.
In Limit Texas Holdem the amount a player can bet is fixed, the player only has to make the choice of whether to bet or not.
The key difference between Limit Texas Holdem and the other Holdem variants, Pot Limit and No Limit, is that a maximum of four bets is allowed per player during any betting round but in No Limit and Pot Limit there is no limit to the number of raises that a player can make.
The basic pattern of play (See diagram below):
Played with two to ten players.
Players to left of the Dealer, Dealer Button, post the big blind and small blind, forced bets by each player.
Each player is then dealt two cards face down, these are the Pocket or Hole cards.
A "pre-flop" round of betting occurs starting with the player to the left of the Big-Blind, this position is often called "Under the Gun".
After this round of betting, the first, the "Flop" is dealt, three community cards face up.
Another betting rounds occurs, the second.
The "Turn" is dealt, a single community card.
Another betting round occurs, the third.
The "River" is dealt, a single community card.
Another betting round occurs, the fourth.
The "Showdown" occurs.
All players use three of the five community cards together with two of their pocket cards to make the best five-card poker hand.
