Home > Poker Games > Betting StructuresThe limit of a poker game is a reference to the games money/betting aspect as well as the games betting structure.
- On the betting/money side there are High-Limit games where a lot of money is involved for example a $100/$200 No-Limit game can have an average pot of over $4,000 where as a Low-Limit game $0.15/$0.30 can have an average pot of $5.
There are even Ultra-High Limit games, where you can find professional players as well as the brave and the stupid, go take a look at Full Tilt Poker.
- the betting structure can either be Fixed Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit:
Fixed Limit
In fixed limit the amount a player can bet is fixed. So that action, bluffing, can occur the fixed amount doubles during the game.
Pot Limit
In pot limit the amount a player can bet, or raise up to, is the amount equal to the size of the whole pot before the raise.
No Limit
In no limit the amount a player can bet, or raise, is any amount that the table stakes rule allows e.g. any amount that the player currently has at the table.
Tables Stakes
Most modern poker games, including online poker, use the table stakes rule which states that each player starts each deal with a certain stake, and plays that deal with that stake.
For example at most online poker cash games there is a minimum and maximum amount of money that you can bring to a table, this effectively saves you losing what you haven't got.
It also alters the way people play. You play with what you bring to the table, if you bust out and have a zero balance then you can buy more money, but only after the hand you bust on.
